DGE Con­gress in Kas­sel 04.03-06.03.2026 - Mi­cro­bi­o­me

Paderborn University represented at the 63rd Scientific Congress of the DGE

The 63rd Scientific Congress of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) took place from 4 to 6 March 2026 at the Kongress Palais in Kassel. International scientists discussed the latest research findings on nutrition, health and the gut microbiome under the guiding theme of "Nutrition and the microbiome - a key to health".

Researchers from Paderborn University also presented their current work at the congress.

GlyCoBrain study

The GlyCoBrain study investigates the connection between the chronotype of students and the amount of sugar in their breakfast. Eva Landgräber presented a poster entitled "Relationship between breakfast quality and chronotype in young students - results of the GlyCoBrain study". Maria Theresia Schminke presented another poster entitled "Correlation between the chronotype of students and the sugar content of breakfast - results of the GlyCoBrain study".

SMART-EAT - Sustainable nutrition education in VR

The SMART-EAT project was presented at the symposium of the Public Health Nutrition and Community Catering specialist groups as part of a themed table moderated by Prof. Dr Anette Buyken, Carina Micheel and Corinna Ostwinkel. The aim was to discuss approaches to digital nutrition education.

The participants had the opportunity to test the first iteration of a VR supermarket and provide feedback. They were supported by Sarah Krings and Dennis Wüppelmann from the SI-Lab at the Software Innovation Campus Paderborn.

Two presentations on the status quo of food knowledge, nutrition knowledge and food and food literacy were also presented as part of the "News from research and practice in nutrition education" session. The topics addressed were the corresponding competences of teaching staff at upper secondary level and of pupils. The presentations were given by Corinna Ostwinkel and Carina Micheel.

CarbHealth study

Alena Schadow presented results of a CarbHealth substudy on the morning and evening glucose response to bread meals in German and Swedish individuals at increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Sugar tax - scoping review

What contextual factors could play a role in the measured effects of taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages in European countries and what criteria for the transferability of the research results to the German context can be derived from this? Stella Duwendag presented the initial results of a scoping review on these questions.

Presentation of the WBAE report

Prof Dr Anette Buyken presented the WBAE report "More choice at the common table" together with Prof Dr Britta Renner, Prof Dr Ute Nöthlings and Prof Dr Jakob Linseisen. The focus was on the role of alternative products for a more sustainable diet. Buyken focussed in particular on the evaluation and management of these products in the food system.

WATCH study

As part of a collaboration between Professor Dr Lars Libuda and the Department of Child Nutrition at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Aziza J. Belgardt (external doctoral candidate in the Nutritional Science working group) investigated the effects of varying ambient temperatures on fluid loss in kindergarten children. Based on her findings, she derived needs-based drinking recommendations for times of climate change as part of her poster presentation.

Vitamin D, inflammation and mental abnormalities

Laura Schlarbaum presented results from the KiGGS study on the correlation between vitamin D status and mental disorders in children and adolescents in Germany. The study investigated whether inflammation influences this correlation.

In addition to the scientific contributions, the Nutrition, Consumption and Health (ECG) student council was also represented at the congress. Students supported the organisation on site and took the opportunity to gain insights into current research and make contacts in science and practice.
